The United States never overcame its founding contradictions. No nation can call itself the “land of the free” while practicing slavery, enforcing apartheid, and underwriting right-wing death squads overseas. Sooner or later, a moral reckoning will arrive.

1. From 1619 to 1865, slavery in what became the United States allowed people to legally own stolen Africans and their descendants.

2. From 1865 to 1965, African Americans endured Jim Crow, an American apartheid system of segregation, disenfranchisement, racial terror, and caste rule. Nazi legal theorists later studied American race law, including Jim Crow, as they built their own racial state.

3. That racial state culminated in the Holocaust: the murder of six million Jews and millions of other victims.

That is a powerful image.
