Half of surveyed Texas Tech faculty changed course content on their own after the chancellor's memos restricting teaching on race, gender, and sexuality. More than half say they're now looking for other jobs as a result of the memos.

Half of Surveyed Faculty at Texas Tech Say They Altered Course Content Without Being Asked To
The findings of an unscientific, faculty-conducted survey suggested that new policies on teaching about race and sex have changed university instruction.

Rainbow capitalism actually is a good thing but it's as a warning light, not as actual social progress; when the rainbow capitalism stops, it's a sign that capital doesn't feel that paying lip service to queers' humanity is currently advantageous

1/ I've been getting a lot of questions about Covid lately: Are we heading into a summer wave? Should high-risk people get a spring booster? And will there even be a vaccine this fall? So I thought now would be a good time to round up those questions and let you know where things stand 👇

It’s the first of June, the beginning of Pride month. Stonewall was a riot. Trans rights are human rights. No one gets to erase us from history. Fight back against book bans. Fuck anybody who thinks we don’t deserve love or bodily autonomy. They don’t get to steal our joy.

Something I hope people will consider is that the reason there are so many enraging anti-education pieces coming out right now is that there's a full-court press from PR departments in tech & asset management. Nothing about the last year went according to script for their investments.

UC Berkeley Law creates new AI policy that bans AI for "conceptualizing, outlining, drafting, revising, translating, or editing any work submitted for credit" or exams because "thinking remains the sine qua non of good lawyering (and of a quality legal education)." That's what I'm talking about.

So what now? If the students--all the students--are our charge, then we keep working and teaching. And in so doing we must celebrate Juniper's life. Must recognise that silence will neither honour her nor save the rest of us, that it won't save the institution. Advocacy must ring with pride.

Here's my Canvas discourse: I like being able to put a "sticker" on my student's work. But the stickers they have are quite limited. I hate that the default time for assignment submission deadlines changed from 11:59 pm to 12:00 am. Those are very different times on the same date.

What does a university have that Google cannot offer its workers? Art History departments, Classics departments, History departments, Music Theory, etc. The humanities are what distinguishes universities in an AI economy. Universities defunding the humanities are digging their own graves.

The paradox, however, is that the long term survival of public higher education rests in distinguishing it from the type of training that corporate America offers people debt free & with a salary. W/o this distinction, universities don’t give people a reason to attend.
