And to be clear, when I say "publishing" I rarely mean the front line workers who are trying to do too many jobs with too few resources and often having their best ideas shot down. I mean the mess of management & bureaucracy that keeps them from being nimble & meeting the moment.

Thinking further on publishing plight: what’s doing mega well now is books by people who previously self-published. All the shiny of a traditional debut, but with the power of a fan base, savvy marketing skills and used to doing it on their own. These hardworking writers deserve all success BUT…

#2, All Hail Chaos, has her frantically trying to deal with the fallout of her choices. More hilarity, mixed with tragedy and betrayal. We spend more time with other characters. And there's a huge juicy SURPRISE at the end, which I should have seen coming but somehow didn't.

There's a new SRB book:All Hail Chaos. #2 in the Time of Iron series. #1 was a dying cancer patient isekai'd into her sister's favorite book series. Unfortunately, due to her illness, she doesn't remember some very key plot points, and makes everything worse. I found it both emotional and hilarious.

& the same reason predatory people date young. They don’t know better. They say yes to covers, say yes to a ton of work, burn themselves out. I chaired a young writer whose book was #1 in the country & she was wrecked & worrying about having to make a TikTok. ‘You do NOT have to do that’ I yelled.

We all know the answer to this one, though. Debuts don’t have track, so publishers, with appropriate hype, can get big sell-in numbers from bookshop buyers, maybe even some foreign deals etc, and move on to the next debut without track. Painless profits for them.

my biggest deal by a MILE was my debut. That… did not go well… and it is also a very weird feeling for your labour to be worth more in your 20s than your 40s.

I always beg publishers to make Brennan huge on spine, being harder to find due to misshelving is rough!
