The US does a terrible job of supporting children and families with a key point of failure being childcare. As a parent I've experienced this first hand and left a job to care for my kids when they were young because paid care was too expensive and about as much as my salary at the time.

Car dependency is an extremely inequitable way to structure society. In places where car ownership is optional, low and high income households spend roughly an equal % of income on transportation. In car dependent places, transportation costs are 4x higher for low income households.
