Today, Vancouver council passed a rezoning that will replace a SINGLE(!) Shaughnessy mansion with 31 apartments. Gigantic single family homes hoard so much land on the West Side. This should be legal to build everywhere by right.

This in Vancouver is NIMBYs opposing housing density as "Urban renewal" because their identity is still in stopping highways. They're unable to think progressively in a context that requires change instead of opposition - and where they are now wealthy and privileged.

I think because they've been rallying against towers for quite a while now, and using Kits' multi-unit conversions and low rise apartments as an alternative, they can't muster more than "multiplexes are okay, but these ones are too boxy 😥" at this point

At neighbourhood meetings opposing density & calling for more consultation, someone will ask the crowd "Why aren't young people here?" The young ppl are being priced out *today*. If they expect a likely move within a few years, they'll be somewhere else before NIMBYs are satisfactorily consulted.

This comment after another cyclist was hit in the neighbourhood by a driver running a stop sign has been stuck in my head for a while. Someone was on an ambulance stretcher, and still a roundabout is for slowing bikes, not preventing drivers from running through the side street intersection.
