The 2003-04 Red Sox and Yankees met in the ALCS twice, split 14 games. Many turned on unlikely acts (good and bad). There are 50 books, movies, documentaries about these teams, nearly all finding character, choking, heroism, gutlessness. Play those games again and who the hell knows what happens?

A friend came over to watch Game 1 last week. He’s a big sports fan, but not a baseball obsessive. Knows the game, not the details. Sits down and says “Hey, why is the first game in Toronto?” Because they had a better record. “WTF?”

Personally, I find post-season baseball more fun *because* there are often no overarching conclusions to be drawn. Who has played the best this week? Blue Jays? Who is the best team? Dunno. Who is going to win Friday? No idea, can’t wait. There have been some incredible plays this week. It’s cool.

And here I thought my Dodger fan-friends were overstating their bullpen troubles.

Walked around my old campus this morning, and would occasionally see someone and think “wow, I wonder if that’s …” before doing some quick math and shutting that thought down.

Today I am flying from Eugene (Pacific Time) through Denver (Mountain Time) and on to Albany (Eastern Time) while trying to monitor/watch four baseball games taking place God knows when and now finally understand Einstein’s “time is an illusion”.

You look at every culture that's ever existed and the running theme is everyone pretty much just wants to play/dance to music, make art, eat stewed meat wrapped in flat bread, and tell stories about the shapes we find in the stars. Somehow we turned that into wars and overtime and profit margins.

The lesson we never learn from the trade deadline is that “shuffling bodies” is not proof that one team “cares more”. The people who gain from the deadline are the bloggers and opinion-traders, but the rest of us are just happy to be watching baseball again.
