Cities in America being filled with cars while cities around the world use more "old" technology like trains is a reminder that the tech we use is a choice. Just because something is new, doesn't mean it requires replacement of what's better. But American capitalism tries to convince us otherwise.

This headline made me sad and then confused about that sadness.

5 journalists are dead and the NYT decides to write a smear piece depicting Al Jazeera as a Hamas mouthpiece. AJ is far from perfect & deserves as much scrutiny & criticism as many others. But the timing & one-sidedness of the article is an effort to legitimise the killing of AJ’s staff.

There is no proof that Sharif did anything other than report on the attacks of fellow Palestinians. But even if he did, that doesn’t make him a legitimate target while he is working as a Journalist.

I find this all so fucking tedious, the philosophy and philology and ideology and theology of it all, on and on forever, getting nowhere. The only actual question worth considering is the status of people living under the actual authority of the actual State of Israel. Everything else is commentary.

The US asks Hamas to accept a 60 day ceasefire on the basis of vague commitment to end the war. The US is unwilling to push Netanyahu to withdraw IDF from Rafah (current sticking point in the negotiations). Hard to believe the US would be willing to stop Israel from restarting the war in 60 days.

And, when given a choice btwn a full deal ending the war and freeing all the hostages vs. a 'multiphase' deal (60-day ceasefire only, only 10 living hostages freed, no Israeli commitment not to resume fighting), 74% of Israeli respondents chose the former, only 8% the latter.

What we are seeing in Israel’s decision is a state who has immense power but has lost control. The Israeli govt is near collapse every few months, there are no real military wins in Gaza in the eyes of the Israeli public, and so the state is trying to re-create control by force

One thing social media has taught me (though I have definitely experienced it in other media too): a lot of people, even quite smart people, are worryingly bad at reading comprehension. For instance: many have trouble distinguishing between someone *describing* a thing and *advocating* that thing.
