Digital distribution isn't an issue the issue is gamers spent twenty years arguing tooth and nail that 'games are art' without ever really reckoning what that means. Because art isn't a product.

How many people that draw, write, paint, sing make a living off of it? Like a fraction of a percent. But people make art cause that's what people do, that's how the world works. People will always make art, because someone decided they wanted it to exist.

A thousand pub bands playing shows after work isn't considered a failure of the music industry, a million webcomics with an audience of three isn't a failure of the comics industry. That's just how art works.

But when arguing that games are art a lot of people had it in their mind that games are like a special art? They're not the thing made by people who have other jobs as a passion. They're made by like miyamoto of kojima.

Games as art was more of a way of clawing onto something that would grant videogames credibility, not an actual like ernest expression of games as a form of expression for people.

So now we have ten thousand steam games a day or some shit cause yeah. Man games are art. Millions of people are making games cause they want them to exist while working a full time job. That's how art works.

It's the realisation of so many people got upset at roger Ebert for like twenty years. Games as art doesn't mean we only get art galleries, and record stores. It means we get millions of messy weird non commercial games made as a form of expression and it fuckin rules.

So much of what is happening right now in tech is about forcing people into rentier economies where they become dependent on tightly controlled platform ecosystems. Cultural production of all kinds gets broken into micro-commodities; you no longer get a full product but a subscription.

This "too many games" rhetoric needs to stop. It covers up the real driving force of this crisis in the games industry which is tied to the larger structural organization and political economy of the tech industries and how they want to constrain and control the consumption of their products.
