#OnThisDay in 1942, The USS LAFAYETTE, formerly the SS NORMANDIE caught fire in New York Harbor while being converted to a troopship. Despite an expensive salvage operation in August of 1943, the righted LAFAYETTE had sustained too much damage to be easily repaired. #MaritimeHistory
