#OnThisDay in 1900, the deadliest natural disaster in American history occurred, when one of the worst Atlantic hurricanes hit Galveston. The Category 4 storm surge was between 8 and 15 feet. Wind speeds were estimated at up to 140 miles per hour.

#OnThisDay in 1962, the SS AQUARAMA made its last trip on the Great Lakes. AQUARAMA began its life in 1945 as a transoceanic troop carrier called the MARINE STAR.

R. Loren Graham was fascinated with steamboats from an early age, living in Boston and on the North Shore. He captured his personal and professional passion as a Marine Photo Service photographer, where he was vice president in 1941.

Forty years ago, on September 1 at 12:48 a.m., observers sighted debris on the smooth ocean floor. The team and crew sprung into action. Finally, they spotted a boiler identical to photos from 1911, and then they found the hull.

Today is #NationalLighthouseDay, which commemorates the passage of the law in 1789 that authorized the first federal lighthouse in the United States as part of Congress’s first Public Works Act. Between 1828 and 1905, at least 122 women held the official government position of lighthouse keeper.
