Today, I attended a community violence intervention discussion, hearing from Denver Mayor Johnston, CO Rep. Mabrey, Dr. Alirez with Life-Line Colorado hosting the event, and former Congresswoman @gabbygiffords.bsky.social with Giffords Center for Violence Intervention — all committed to safety!

It was great to visit with and hear from former Congresswoman @gabbygiffords.bsky.social and others involved with @giffords.org at a reception this evening. Thank you for coming to Colorado with the dedication to saving lives from gun violence!

In last night’s @jeffcomoms.bsky.social September meeting, we learned how to write compelling letters to the editor to convey values, problems, solutions, and actions. And, we had a very special guest, Representative @pettersen.house.gov, who said a few words as well. Thank you for being there!

Last night on our @giffords.org Gun Owners for Safety Colorado Committee, we discussed upcoming events, community outreach, developing partnerships, and educational opportunities. We’re also planning for National Injury Prevention Day in November.

Today, I attended the @giffords.org Latino Advisory Council Launch, a group of gun violence survivors, educators, researchers, and activists guiding Latino outreach work and serving as ambassadors for Giffords. They discussed issues facing the community, such as gun violence and access to resources.

Thursday, I attended @everytown.bsky.social’s “Before and After: The Life Cycle of Gun Violence,” where we heard from veterans as survivors, doctors, law enforcement, and politicians, on the impact gun violence has on our communities. I also got to meet @ferrellzabala.bsky.social!

On last night’s @momsdemand.bsky.social statewide meeting, representatives from Denver Youth Program discussed their community outreach initiatives, like the R.E.A.C.H. Clinic, providing care & support to those recovering from gunshot injuries in Denver. Check out how you can support them.

This past weekend, I attended the @giffords.org Gun Owners for Safety Regional Training & Workshop Retreat in Dallas, Texas, learning about our mission for gun safety legislation. It was great to network with other responsible gun owners, including meeting @gabbygiffords.bsky.social.

Attended a town hall last night, hosted by the CO Democratic Party, with former Congresswoman Giffords, US Senator Bennet, and State House Majority Leader Duran, to discuss gun violence prevention & community safety. Thankful for their attendance, support, inspiration, and hard work in these times.

For Wednesday’s @everytown.bsky.social’s July Splash session, we learned how to perfect our elevator pitch as our stories help explain who we are as a movement, what we do, & how we do it. I believe in responsible gun ownership and sensible gun laws that help keep us and our communities safe.

Friday, on the @everytown.bsky.social July Splash Federal Hour of Action session, we learned to contact Congress to support the Savings Our Veterans Lives Act and oppose the Federal Concealed Carry Mandate which would gut states’ gun laws and let people carry hidden, loaded guns in public.

Last night, I joined the Colorado SMART Week Planning Session to discuss our ideas and action items on how we plan to get the word out in our communities about secure gun storage to save kids' lives. Guns are the #1 killer of kids in the US.

On Wednesday, I joined volunteers all across the US for a SMART Week Planning Workshop where we discussed different ways we can spread the word about this lifesaving campaign.

Joined the "Intro to Be SMART" call today where we learned how this campaign promotes responsible gun ownership to reduce child gun deaths. We heard from advocates across the US on how they promote these lifesaving techniques in their own communities. I look forward to implementing them in mine!

Yesterday, I attended the Be SMART Longmont May Lunch & Learn, hearing what happens with unsecured guns. Secure guns, Model responsible behavior, Ask about guns in homes, Recognise the role of guns in suicides, and Tell others to be SMART to keep guns securely locked and safe from children.

On the @everytown.bsky.social National All Supporters Call last night, we learned about the Wear Orange movement, how ghost guns pose a serious threat to public safety, how it's important to secure guns in homes AND in vehicles, and how Everytown uses data for laws, policy, research, and more.

Saturday at Future Fest, an event celebrating Denver’s youth for their community contributions, I volunteered for Colorado Ceasefire where we gave away free gun locks, safes, and material. Every youth I spoke to had been in an active shooter drill; it broke my heart but reminded me why I do this.

Yesterday, I attended the @giffords.org Gun Owners for Safety Colorado Committee meeting to discuss data from cofips.org and upcoming events. After, I joined @jeffcomoms.bsky.social for a community walk in a park to hear about updates and socialise with fellow GVP activists.

Last Tuesday, I joined the @giffords.org Gun Owners for Safety Meet-n-Greet where we heard that 6,500 veterans die each year by suicide, 70% of those by firearms, and 50% of veterans own guns. HR 1041 does a disservice to our veterans by eliminating the VA's ability to refer veterans in crisis.

Last night, I saw a screening of “Columbine 2024: 25 Years of Trauma,” a documentary featuring one of the teachers there, Kiki Leyba, and his wife, Kallie, regarding the enduring trauma from the aftermath. Gun violence affects not just survivors but their loved ones as well. www.columbine2024.com
