After a shooting in 1996, Australia enacted sweeping gun safety legislation and experienced no public mass shootings for two decades and a significant decrease in firearm deaths. Now, Australian lawmakers are acting again to further protect people from gun violence after this weekend’s shooting.

There have been at least 159 shootings at schools in the US in 2025—resulting in 53 deaths and 148 injuries nationally. One year ago today, a 15-year-old student armed with a Glock pistol and high-capacity magazines opened fire at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, killing 14-year-old freshman Rubi Vergara and 42-year-old Erin Michelle West, a teacher at the school. 🧵

Today was the second day of final exams for Brown University students. Instead of finishing the semester strong, thousands were forced to shelter-in-place while an active shooter stormed the campus. Reports say at least two people were killed, and eight others are in critical, but stable, condition.

A high school wrestler was shot and wounded by a man, who then turned the gun on himself, in a school parking lot early this morning in Stewartville, Minnesota. Authorities said around forty of the victim’s teammates and coaches heard the gunshots.

As of November 21, there were at least 154 incidents of gunfire on school grounds nationally this year, resulting in 49 deaths and 135 injuries. Our young people deserve so much better—they deserve lawmakers who will take common-sense action to keep them safe.

@governor.ny.gov announced that gun violence across 28 New York communities has decreased by 60% since 2021. This dramatic, life-saving progress is thanks in part to a record $3 billion investment in public safety. 👏

De’Jon Darrell Fox Jr., a sophomore at Kentucky State University with a bright future ahead of him, deserved to come home from finals week alive. His mother is heartbroken. “I didn’t think that this was something that I have to worry about while he’s at school.”

UPDATE: 19-year-old De’Jon Fox was killed in the shooting at Kentucky State University, and another student remains in critical condition. Authorities said a parent of a student fired at the victims near a residence hall. This senseless violence is preventable. De’Jon should still be here.
