Also, Stheno's just fun to write given her somewhat dour temperament, hiding a gentler soul behind all the wanton violence when the situation calls for it. (Which parts of Year One very much did...) Bryony/Stheno have a bit of a sunshine/grumpy dynamic that's always enjoyable to play with. :)

That's a whole other thing when you've got a mix of blood and chosen family as part of your dynamic. And we haven't even added Euryale into the mix yet directly to complicate how that dynamic plays out. But if I'd started with Medusa? Whole other set of dynamics would have unfolded. ->

And we do finally meet Medusa in this current story (A Haven Far From Home) after first hearing about her and Euryale in-world in The Saw-Toothed Solution. And of course there are complicated family dynamics. Doing the cursed-Medusa story means her being adopted into the gorgon family. Which... ->

It's the delight in the unexpected. In the connecting with people society does not value. Also I wanted a sex work positive opening story, and one that engaged the enjoyment of physicality and carnality while disabled. I wanted that to be the tone Hulderotica had out of the gate. ->

Bryony is blind. She never sees Stheno's face (though she does map it in Tender is her Touch, but she's using a different set of parameters for evaluating "beauty"), focusing instead on how they connect. As does Stheno. To her, Bryony being trans is a pleasant surprise. That's also intentional. ->

Two figures in various contexts considered "monstrous." (A theme I revisit a lot in my work, in various genres.) With Stheno involved it becomes a story about who gets to be beautiful - about who gets to be *desirable*. And in what context that's evaluated between the pair of Bryony/Stheno. ->

But with Stheno who is, like her sister Euryale, considered to be hideous (in body and spirit: a murderer of more men than both her sisters combined) you get a pairing between two figures considered classically "hideous." (See: the long history of trans women labelled "ugly," "traps," etc.) ->

Using Medusa as the pairing in a romance with a trans femme sex worker creates some complicated themes that are worth exploring (rape and recovery/reclamation of bodily autonomy and consent via exploration of pleasure in controlled context are potentially inescapable conversations in that story). ->

But whether working from the story of Athena cursing Medusa after her rape by Poseidon, or the myths that have her as one of the three gorgon siblings born to Phorcys and Ceto (or other variant lineages; Hulderotica uses the curse origin), using Medusa as part of that pairing isn't what I wanted. ->

And a big part of that is how ubiquitous Medusa is as the archetypal gorgon in Western media, which much less frequently engages with her sisters Euryale and Stheno. Even less frequent is engaging the version of the myth where all three are born gorgons, rather than Medusa's transformation. ->

Also on the topic of A Haven Far From Home, and Bryony/Stheno in the series, because I meant to talk about this yesterday and didn't get to it: When Tender is her Touch (the first Bryony/Stheno story) came out, a lot of people thought Stheno was Medusa. (I only named her at story's close.) ->

What did I absolutely forget to do here? Note that this story is 7.3k of WLW romance/monsterfucking. I'm totally serious about the vibe though. Very: "We lost a fight/almost died. Let's go heal our wounds/deal with that trauma in a pseudo-pastoral setting. While dealing with our issues/family."
