The No Kings protest in Chicago was so thick and so massive, the march had been going for 20 minutes yet the crowd in Daley Plaza had been unable to move forward, one photographer with an aerial view reported.

Protests in Chicago continue, including Tuesday night's "emergency protest" against the arrest of Columbia graduate and green card holder Mahmoud Khalil, an activist. “ICE detaining someone for what seems like political reasons is particularly frightening,” said Anna Strzepek, 19, a Loop resident.

Just this week, Chicago is set to see at least six protests throughout the city, from a rally for Ukraine last Sunday to a march for International Women’s Day this Saturday. While the focus of each protest has varied, a common theme appears to unite them all: a rejection of Trump.

Meanwhile, in Illinois, a Chicago landlord was ordered to pay $80K to former tenants for threatening to call ICE on them, a violation of a 2019 state law. Illinois was the second state in the country to pass such protections for immigrant tenants.

Many only speak their native language, few know Spanish and most don’t know English. Few organizations offer resources in Indigenous languages. Most don’t trust the government. “Few understand what to do in case of getting arrested by ICE,” said Pablo Pineda, a leader in the Guatemalan community.

“He’s been given power in large part by our faith community, and that’s why, as a faith community, we must get together and respond,” Jackson said.

A parent dropping off two students at an Acero charter school was detained by ICE. The arrest occurred just a day before the Chicago Board of Education plans to vote to shutter three Acero schools at the end of the school year despite vowing in December to keep them open. @nellsalzman.bsky.social
