Culture, which varies among generations, plays an enormous role. Beginning maths UG in 🇮🇹 used to be 80% women. Mathematics was supposed to be both a women's subject and an easy path to a decently paid family compatible job (highschool teacher).

Then I read more, and found out that quotes from students were about the expectation that they had to work hard 😓… Is this a cultural/generational issue? 🤷🏽‍♀️

A great loss for us all. His most famous result, the resolution of singularities in characteristic zero, was a class example of how a "simple" strategy carried out with accuracy and determination proved a wonderful and very strong result. He was a king, generous person and will be much missed.
