I’ve been told this little sidewalk ramp on N Church St in Kalamazoo was one of the very first curb cuts in the U.S. It obviously needs work but, ironically, after all these years this ramp still meets current ADA width, cross slope, and running slope specs.

It’s a drop in the bucket, but this may just be the very first MDOT-installed continuous crosswalk on a state route. The sidewalk is continuous through the intersection and the road rises to meet it, not the other way around. Happy to try it out.

More Than a Cyclist

"We are all just temporarily abled" (-unknown) and "We are all just one test result away from our lives changing forever" (-my Physician's Assistant former roommate) are two quotes I share a lot, relevant to literally every class I teach on transportation, cities, health, and urban theory.

In a real masterclass of victim shaming, Iowa DOT tracks the safety equipment used and the emotional state of non-motorist crashes but appears dismissive of any infrastructure (or lack thereof). If coupling theory tells us anything, it's that it's critical to understand roadway CONTEXT.

Other than basic funding issues, in what way can a state DOT meaningfully improve access to local public transit?

Thinking about hosting a series of slow roll rides this summer, but am curious - what makes a ride particularly fun, in your opinion? How long should it be? What makes it worth going to? I’ve been on a couple rides that were just…stale, or boring. Can’t really explain it.

My DOT coworker is having significant car issues and everyone is commiserating except me; I’m trolling them with AAA cost of car ownership stats and electric cargo bike ads.

It’s quite easy to bike in the winter if your local municipality properly plows the infrastructure. My 3.5 mile commute to the outdoor ice rink was the perfect warm up for skating with my nieces and nephews.
