Tonight, the Department of Homeland Security announced that on Tuesday they detained 14 of our neighbors on immigration charges. What they initially reported as a targeted criminal enforcement action was in fact an identity-based raid on people who had done nothing but show up for work that day.

Sorting through my memories of everything that happened on Tuesday, and reflecting on how some of the first phone calls I got and first people I saw onsite were union leaders in Saint Paul. I don’t know that unions ever get the credit they deserve for showing up for ALL workers, all the time.

It’s been almost 48 hours and we still don’t know with certainty how many people were detained on Tuesday, the grounds (if any) on which they’re being held, or what will happen next for these members of our community—all of whom have families and friends and people who love them. This isn’t normal.

Today, our community experienced what too many across the country have been forced to endure in recent months. Federal agents from multiple law enforcement agencies, including ICE, came into our neighborhood and have detained and arrested multiple individuals.

Update as of 10:55 AM: Federal agents have left the Territorial/Hampden location. Mayor Carter and I are on site. We have heard reports of several individuals that have been taken by the federal government. At least one person was arrested.

Our office is on site as the situation continues to evolve. There is a visible ICE presence, but we continue to be told this not a widespread immigration raid. We are working with community and government partners to monitor and ensure any action remains within the scope of a valid warrant.

There have been reports of federal government activity in Ward Four this morning. As of right now, we believe the entities involved are FBI and DEA, not ICE. We’re continuing to work to get official confirmation of this, and to monitor the activity in the area closely. I’ll share more as I’m able.
