Yeah, I'm deeply weirded out by this, in part because I spent weeks earlier this year writing about gargantuan cirrate octopuses that never existed. And yet... now they seemingly do, in the Cretaceous. Incredible.

Btw, the 19 m max. total length estimate for the Cretaceous octopus Nanaimoteuthis (now already cited everywhere) derives from upscaling this extant species, which barely reaches 50 cm in total length. There is no evidence that the two are closely allied. www.inaturalist.org/taxa/432536-...

New data published by Hao & Xu (2026) in ZJLS appears to show that Huanansaurus ganzhouensis (named 2015) from Ganzhou was spectacularly crested but also that it's synonymous with the sympatric Corythoraptor jacobsi (named 2017), in which case that latter name must fall out of use. #dinosaurs
