Techbros seem to love Tolkien, so here's an analogy to help you understand what genAI is. GenAI is The One Ring. You think your use is justified, b/c you don't have evil in your heart. But it came from evil, it is intended for evil purpose, & anything you do with it will be twisted to that end.

Been thinking on the use of GenAi for mood boards. Ethics and legal risks aside, I truly believe using GenAi as references deprives one of many pivotal things. Here’s a blurb on what I mean:

consider my feedback: i loved working at @larianstudios.com until AI. reconsider and change your direction, like, yesterday. show your employees some respect. they are world-class & do not need AI assistance to come up with amazing ideas.

Also, non-artists don’t really get a fucking say on “what’s an overreaction” to how GenAi is being used from a studio who has prided themselves on their artists ability and creativity.

Those *world class artists* must be so thrilled about this

I have loved Larian and everything they’ve represented and stood for, but this obvious change in tone towards GenAi is… confusing and extremely disappointing. There’s absolutely no reason to use GenAi, even for references. Beyond frustrating to see.

A characters attractiveness or attire is not a trait that will or will not represent women. Women of color, with physical disabilities, with conditions like alopecia + vitiligo, hair textures, diverse body types… these are the things a character model can have to further represent women in games.

Whether you think she’s subjectively too pretty or not pretty enough or over sexualized… the fact this is -always- the conversation while discussing women and even female characters is exhausting. Women are, and will forever be, more than their appearance. Talk about something else.

It's kinda sad that whether positive or negative, we somehow always end up with how attractive people think a female protagonist is dominating online discourse when a new game is announced. Tomb Raider is arguably the most iconic video game character there is (and she's cool AF), I'm excited! 🎮✨
