I had not watched OMITB prior to this, but I'm so glad David suggested it! This episode is such an out-of-nowhere masterpiece and one of the most artfully done episodes we've covered on Gimmicks!

Somewhat criminally, we weren't able to discuss Howard, perfectly depicted by Michael Cyril Creighton. This man makes sweaters look so good, but he is not in the episode discussed. Becomes main cast in Season 3!

My favorite example of Growing the Beard is a very deliberate example: Popular. Ryan Murphy sold it as another WB Teen Drama and then slowly made it more and more a parody that, by mid-season, we had an episode where the entire female cast was locked in the bathroom on their periods.

The thing about Survivor is that the series evolved continually, both from a production standpoint and a strategy standpoint. I'd argue that the series gelled into its final form with Fans vs Favorites. We have the hidden immunity idol, returning icons, and even Exile Island.

I also loved the TGIF Disney World episodes that were basically ads. It could have been the time Boy Meets World and Step By Step briefly crossed over, Michelle being the worst at the Happiest Place on Earth, or all the Connors being insanely out of character for 30 minutes.

The Bradys, in particular, visited such exotic locations as the Grand Canyon (where Cindy and Bobby got lost), Hawaii (with cursed tikis and Vincent Price), and, most exotic of all, a theme park in Cincinatti, Ohio.

I always loved these "Vacation" episodes for the same reason most people did: it was a chance to see your favorite characters in places you might not have visited.

SIT ON IT

This was a fun one to research, like covering the first “bottle episode” in THE OUTER LIMITS or the first TV episode to use the Rashomon style with DONNA REED. It’s so fun finding the little threads that make up the grand tapestry of television.

In case my mention of the 1970s cartoon WAIT TILL YOUR FATHER GETS HOME on today’s @gimmickspod.bsky.social was vaguely familiar, here’s the opening credits to try to further jog your memory.
