After a few nights of reading through thousands of pages of PRMs I have finally implemented a modesetting driver for Intel HD graphics on Redox OS: gitlab.redox-os.org/redox-os/bas.... There is much more to do, but there is now a clear path to native hardware accelerated graphics!

There's still some weirdness but I have mate-session running on Redox. We now have GTK, X11, wayland, d-bus, and dconf ported (though there are still some bugs). With these fundamentals in place, porting software from Linux has become much easier.

Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS and COSMIC Epoch 1 will be release December 11th, 2025. Future Pop!_OS releases, starting with Pop!_OS 26.04 LTS, will now align with the Ubuntu LTS release timing (approximately two weeks after the Ubuntu release date).

Redox OS performance is steadily improving. Here is 1080p video being played on a 1440p display. Most of the CPU usage is software video decoding, with the orbital windowing system adding minimal overhead. A careful look through the CPU times can verify this. 1/2

cosmic-comp now supports software rendering which improves the experience in virtual machines and notably adds support for DisplayPort docks!

Yesterday I went through a ton of issues with Redox OS on riscv64. I was able to get everything compiling and working but netsurf, which has unusual soft/hard float ABI linking issues. Here is cosmic-term showing screenfetch output.

I have just compiled Rust code for bare-metal SPARCV8 and executed it under Solaris 2.6 on a microSPARC-II. I suspect that no-one has ever done this before. Literally no-one.

COSMIC Store now supports managing Flatpak repos including adding custom sources. This was necessary to add COSMIC applets in the Store. Many distros prefer not to include additional sources but are cool with features that allow users to add them themselves.

Redox now supports sending file descriptors over Unix sockets (SCM_RIGHTS), which means it should now be possible to port Wayland compositors and programs using D-Bus.
