This is Step by Step thread for “Blossoming Defense”!

You want even stylized things to feel real within their stylized context and our mental understanding of shapes and light will always impact how we observe things. I always love watching how cartoons that don’t resemble people at all will replicate all kinds of natural motion and lighting.

A more practical one: clothes have thickness, even skin-tight ones. Remember that the body has to be able to fit within the clothing. Practice drawing in where the body should go even when you can't see it. (Goes for any time anatomy is obscured)

Learn to look at things. Look at the light hitting the grain of a stone wall. Look at the sag and droop of a cat's belly. Look at the silhouettes made by shadows and by light. Drawing, even fantasy, requires coming to know the things around you.

Coming up with ideas is also a skill and takes practice. Key in to the world around you. Absorb good art, movies, books, music, games and let them affect your art. Sounds dumb, but just do it. Getting more pieces done faster will improve your art more than fretting over one piece till it's perfect.

When using refrence don't just refrence photos also refrence other artists. Using a photo ref to draw an owl will get the right proportions. But starting out you have no clue how to translate a 3d form to linework. Loads of art is about problem solving and it is real good to study someone...
