Carolina hammerheads are visually indistinguishable from scalloped hammerheads (also prohibited in FL). Most people probably can’t tell them apart from great hammerheads (also prohibited in FL) either. So, this change makes sense and also as a practical matter changes nothing.

This is a good example of an environmental problem that is about people’s values and priorities, and so isn’t really solvable by data. The shark part is pretty simple: tourism can change shark behavior at least a little, but in most examples it’s not clear that change matters much.

EXTREMELY COOL BAT STUFF: A study out in Science today found that the greater noctule bat, Europe's largest, hunts and catches *migrating birds* while in flight. In at least one case, a bat climbed to more than 1200 feet, then chased a robin downward FAST until it caught it near the ground.

An amazing day on the water with the The Natural History Society of Maryland- we caught, sampled, tagged, and released a big tiger shark and two nurse sharks!

I spent a whole miserable day trying to find a detached satellite tag that was broadcasting its location constantly. I was supposedly within a couple hundred yards of it all day. We never found it.

Bears also have well documented behavioral adaptations to human contact which does increase the danger from bears who learn to associate people with food.

Okay, a little snarky, but also a truly, deeply held belief: No shade to anyone who is afraid of sharks (or bears, or any large predator!) but please understand that’s an issue of yours, not the world’s, and it’s your approach, not their presence on the planet, that needs to be modified.

To illustrate (one of) the difficulties of this approach: in the last five years, I’ve samples a few hundred blacknose sharks. I’ve only been able to sample TWO of those sharks twice, and they’re nowhere near as wide-ranging a species as tigers. Locating a *specific* shark is no easy task.
