Had a great day in Hebden Bridge catching up with the Miss Moonshine gang (years ago we wrote a series of books together about a magical shopkeeper called Miss Moonshine). Great to see everyone.

I recorded this before my visit so I can tell you now that I had a great time talking to the women. We ran it as a Q&A session and they asked some great questions. I’d never been in a prison before (so much locking and unlocking of doors!) but I really enjoyed visiting the library and classrooms.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 15: Don’t be a control freak. Give your characters agency. If they can surprise you, ambush you, knock you off balance, it means you’ve made them come to life. Follow them. See what they do.
