LLMs are nothing more than models of the distribution of the word forms in their training data, with weights modified by post-training to produce somewhat different distributions. Unless your use case requires a model of a distribution of word forms in text, indeed, they suck and aren't useful.

So this is at least the second horrific murder in the US within the last six months predicated on “speak English”. Please keep this in mind as you interact with English-only movements. Language ideologies are not benign or apolitical.

when you stop reading "believe women" as "women never lie" and see it as "one of the foundational myths of patriarchy is that women can never be trusted" it makes a lot more sense.

Done with my third analytical chapter. Will take a short break and then start working on the last analytical chapter, on reparative futures - the one I've been really wanting to write. And then after that will be just the intro and concluding chapters.

I just spent months developing in secret a new metasemiotic concept for my PhD thesis. Gave it a name and felt quite proud of it. And then today, I see a prominent scholar publish a conceptual paper that uses the exact same name to coin a related, but different concept. Man, academia is not easy.

Struggling to write my 3rd PhD chapter - I'm trying to view the affective dimensions of ELT labour from a metasemiotic lens. Did this too for my other chapters, but now that I'm decentering language from the analysis, I feel like I'm reaching the limit of my analytical prowess as a trained linguist.

Still busy working on my thesis. I’m now at the 74,000-word mark, and I’m about to begin writing my third analytical chapter. It’s quite amazing to see something finally taking shape, taking on a life on its own. I’m not quite near the finish line but I can kind of already see it from here.
