30 years ago dad had a moving truck full of my recently-passed grandparents belongings dropped at my first home thinking I would need it to furnish the house. 30 years and 1000s of miles from that location I am still trying to sort it all. Generational stuff is hard. Now I also have parents stuff.

I’m working with a team of graduate students to salvage a Canadian Archaeological Assoc meeting nobody wanted to host. It’s going great. Students seem to be relishing chance to make decisions, interact with colleagues and pick up new skills. Professional events are opportunities for mentorship too.

It’s reference letter season at Canadian universities. I try to do my best for both the students and potential supervisors. Remember people read these. Each year we discard refs from colleagues who have ranked everyone in the top 3% for 25 years. If you agree to a reference, don’t be lazy.

The university is shut here in St. John’s as we await the first big snowstorm if the season. I love snow days, and the feeling of calm when the roads are quiet and everyone is at home.
