Today’s amazing and completely not tenuous Easter fact: The Hall is 4 years older than hot cross buns. Brother Thomas Rocliffe of St Albans Abbey began making them in 1361 and would distribute them to the poor on Good Friday.

Rolf Aperol you say? Sounds like our friend April Fool! The Hall's roof has never been thatched -it has always been tiled. 🥳

Did you know that the Hall was originally thatched? We even know one of the thatcher’s names! Rolf Apiol features in our records and travelled from Germany to do the job.

We've been at #Glass-tonbury today: our project to recreate Roman window glass. At 1103 degrees Celcius, our glass furnace is officially the second hottest thing on Bluesky, after @merchantshallyork.org. 🔥😘

Then and now. The photo on your left was taken in the early 20th century and shows the Great Hall still with its partition. Although there was huge change to come, this photo would suggest that not much has changed hasn't changed in 125 years!

Today is March 25th, also known as Lady Day (or the 'Feast of the Annunciation of Our Lady' as written in this 16th century lease from the archive of @merchantshallyork.org). Until 1752 this day marked the start of the new year in England and Wales and it pops up frequently in archival records.

This is how we feel this morning…

Prepare for your mind to be blown. The oak trees that make up the Undercroft were felled in 1358. Their size and scale would suggest that they were at least 200 - 250 years old. Which means they were saplings only 50 years after the Norman Conquest in 1066. Mind. Blown. 🤯

So you know our lovely Great Hall. You will have seen the Undercroft and Chapel but did you know we have smaller spaces equally as gorgeous? These are the anterooms and were built in 1601 and 1947 and house some of our furniture (including a very rare high chair from 1642)! Small but mighty! 💪
