Hmm I’m being very disjointed with Urthposting, I need a new strategy. I will simply pin this post and put my

The future is certainly not distributed here not here right now this wouldn’t happen in the future in the future there is speed and velocity this is the opposite of speed this is system collapse and maybe in that sense it’s a metaphor or omen for the future

one of my favorite stories from the Kalevala is ol Väinämöinen deciding he needs a new boat so he starts up the song that gets the saws and wood up bopping to the beat starting to make his dream boat and gets about halfway through, then realizes he doesn’t remember how it ends

This is nicely put. I can only add that as an academic data scientist who codes in episodic bursts but can spend weeks and months on unrelated duties (e.g. grants), CC all but obliterates the tedious bogging down of reacclimatizing to a codebase and various libraries’ quirks after time away.

i think this is right. LLMs are great for overcoming incidental complexity, we just need to be careful to not to use it to avoid understanding essential complexity. it's way more important to understand
eagain.net/articles/git...
than it is to memorize git syntax (the CLI is not great!)

I think it's also possible we put too high a value on learning qua learning. Learning is good! It's virtuous. But there's also long-term utility to consider. I had Alpha switch a computer from NetworkManager to networkd. I have no idea how to do that myself, but now I know how to *accomplish* it.

What it does is destroy gatekeeping in a lot of areas for people who know *nothing* about that subject but want to try stuff. A non zero amount of outrage is because the gates have been shattered and their remains set on fire.

What’s blowing my mind a bit is that so many things are ‘learn by doing’ but the doing is blocked by abstruse usability (thinking git, TeX, lots of stuff is like this). Claude code shorts out the abstruse usability concerns so you can just do things. And in the doing I am pretty sure I have learned.
