The problem with Texas (as a Texan), is Ds have to win a plurality of Latino, White, and Black votes. As it stands, Crockett is winning the Black vote up 45 and east, while Talarico is winning White plains and Latinos along the border. Still too early but Dallas (and the missing votes) will be key.

I come from a family of educators, and my concern for my students, my partner’s students, and their families is chronic every school year. It does not have to be this way. It’s a choice.

Human capital is finite. You lose graduate student and faculty talent and that capital moves with them. It creates a dearth across numerous fields that impacts knowledge production and cascades beyond our generation - utterly ridiculous

Stark evidence that DOGE’s layoffs are based on ideological goals, not efficiency. For a sense of the magnitude, the distance between liberal and conservative agencies is ~3 pts, so liberal agencies are >60 pct pts more likely to have layoffs. Huge! Meanwhile, size and budget effects are small.

And even people (like me) who are not that worried might find it reasonable to invest in some government-independent platforms as insurance. In any case, the argument for staying on X would be at least somewhat more compelling if it were not literally under a government official's control.

On the proposal that people should stay on X for political cohesion's sake. There's a small but nonzero chance that the Trump administration might aim to punish or surveil political opponents. People who are worried about that are right to seek platforms not controlled by the administration.

Somewhere there is a whole dissertation with clear causal implications of Trump, Musk, and the academic retreat to Blue Sky. I’m a contributing observation.
