Funny enough as a local in a tourist area I don’t care if it tanks. They contribute nothing much to us. The retirement industry alone would keep us going.

As someone who lives surrounded by many hundreds of vacant AirBNB properties, let me assure the property managers that they are indeed part of the problem.

I live in one of them. 10 to 15 minutes from the beach. And every second house in our little lane adjoining street is now BnB.

This is the part of the story many are missing. We had one million empty dwellings at the last Census. Sure not all were short term rentals or landbanked but a LOT were. Reduce Capital growth and many of these will be sold. We spent a week off season in a seaside town. Empty places everywhere.

It shouldn’t even be a choice that we support tax minimisation schemes. So many empty for most of the year houses where I live it’s ridiculous.

A reduction, there is no ban, will where I live. Workers can’t get rentals because of them. I’d like to see ban or strict limitation of stand alone BnB’s. Can’t build a motel on every corner so why should very second house be one.

Excellent demolition of “affordable housing”. It’s a muddled no man’s land between market and social housing, achieving the goals of neither. It functions as a modest benefit to a tiny fraction of middle class families. It’s costly, inefficient and impedes geographic and occupational mobility.

Highly targeted programs are the surest way to deliver bad outcomes for the people they claim to help. Yes “affordable” housing is a rort. The answer isn’t giving cash to people who live in it. It’s investing in public housing at scale so all types of people can live in quality public homes.

Making slight changes to tax settings (especially half-assed tinkering by grandfathering things) is not going to resolve our housing crisis. The market will not adequately create or distribute the things we need to survive.

We don’t have a housing supply problem, we have a hoarding problem. Around 1 million homes are empty or not used as a primary residence. Public housing waitlists across the country are ~200k. We must build new public homes but governments can buy or take existing dwellings too, and they should.
