170 years ago today Stonemasons in Melbourne won the 8 hour day - often presented as a one day strike, this was the culmination of a significant struggle. The Stonemasons were demanding more than a reduction in working hours. They were demanding that their fundamental humanity be recognised.

OTD in 1856, Melbourne's stonemasons won the 8-hour day as standard. It was off the back of Stonemasons in two worksites in Sydney, winning the 8-hour day a year before that showed them what's possible. ✊

The AFR reports there are now no affordable houses for first‑home buyers in any Australian city. Working full‑time should mean you can afford to live where you work. The fix is practical: more public housing, stronger renters’ rights, and fair, phased tax reform. Together, workers can win change.

Treasury data shows most of the CGT discount goes to the top 1%, while workers and young people are locked out of housing. Reducing the discount to 25% is a fair, targeted reform and helps fund the homes Australia needs.

We need more public housing and to fix the tax rules that currently reward wealth more than work, so the next generation isn’t locked out.

We need urgent reform now. Everybody deserves secure housing.

People who work full-time should be able to afford to live near their job, but for many workers, that’s no longer true. Housing has become so expensive because the system rewards professional landlords. This is why union members are taking action on housing and on pay.

Our tax rules let professional landlords off the hook while first-time buyers fight with increasing rents and house prices. Tax rules need to change.

Housing is currently the biggest contributor to the cost of living. If the RBA raise rates today, a homeowner will have to pay more, yet professional landlords can raise rents while claiming higher interest costs as tax deductions. We need reform now.

The system is stacked in favour of property investors who are exploiting negative gearing and capital gains tax breaks. It's time for reform to turn houses back into homes.
