It is often said that a “wave” or “tsunami” of technological change is heading our way. These metaphors are powerful because they shape our sense of what is reasonable, and what is unreasonable. What does AI as a "wave" imply is a reasonable course of action? (1/...)

This is awful. Libraries are at the very heart of what universities do; we can’t fulfill our mission without them.

With the current administration in collapse, I do hope Democrats start to communicate an intention to punish appeasing institutions in the future.

A lot of my friends are impacted. This is what it means to run college like a business when the prevailing business strategy is modeled on private equity, leveraged buy-outs and contemptible short-sightedness.

Maya Polsky's huge co-op apartment at 199 East Lake Shore Drive is up for sale, and it is without exaggeration one of the wildest homes I've ever seen:

Teaching students to avoid "bothering" their teachers stops learning in its tracks, undercuts essential social development, and trains kids not to seek help (from people) when they need it. Its sole function is to enable higher student-teacher ratios.
@aft.org
promoting this is sick and sickening.

People are picking up on increasing (social political and economic) instability, which absolutely--and quite rationally, in the limited sense that's relevant here--affects consumer confidence. That said, consumer sentiment isn't meant to "measure" some other, intrinsic thing except itself.

I had fun testifying before members of Congress today! They—and, more importantly, we—don’t have to tolerate an unchecked Court that blows up the Voting Rights Act or allows rank corruption to sap our government.

UC Berkeley Law creates new AI policy that bans AI for "conceptualizing, outlining, drafting, revising, translating, or editing any work submitted for credit" or exams because "thinking remains the sine qua non of good lawyering (and of a quality legal education)." That's what I'm talking about.

One of the definitive days of this admin imo was the WSJ identifying racist posts from a DOGE staffer - the kind of stuff that would be read out loud to you as HR explains why you're not getting severance - and Vance saying no, we won't let the media cancel people anymore.
