Regardless of tonight’s #Oscar wins, TRAIN DREAMS will forever remain a defining winner of this era of cinema—probably my favorite film of the decade so far. I’m just glad a movie with such lyrical grace secured four nominations, even if it doesn’t take home any awards tonight. 📽️

CRIME 101 - Questionable title, really good flick. Utterly absorbing and clearly indebted to Michael Mann, but grounded in its human element: three highly skilled pros navigating tough work. They're all messily flawed and I wanted them to find redemption. Didn’t expect to be moved, lol, but I was. 📽️

More bummer news. I went to my final screening at Cineplex Cinemas Beaches for CRIME 101. The theatre closes its doors tomorrow after 26 years of operation. It originally opened as Alliance Cinemas — and as you can tell from the photo, that branding was never removed from the building’s facade. 📽️

Gutted. In 2023, I picked Frederick Wiseman’s Menus-Plaisirs Les Troisgros as my most anticipated TIFF film (for the TO Star’s "Chasing the Buzz" poll). I was crushed when the programmer said Wiseman was ill and couldn’t attend the premiere. Even in his 90s, I just assumed he'd make docs forever. 📽️

RIP Robert Duvall. I was so fortunate to attend an In Conversation with him at TIFF in 2014. I still remember how hopeful he was about cinema — he truly believed that period marked a peak era for film. 📽️
