I did this as a long post on the other servers but I don't want to break it up into a thread here so you guys can have a link. In which I (finally (sort of)) explain myself:

WHO IS DEEPFATES
I said “ask me anything” on X and Scott Alexander really took me up on the offer:

If you had to create an abstract machine that takes a short string, like the length of this post, and turns it into a short story of a few thousand words, how would you do that? What is a short story anyway? how do you know if one is good

In The AI Doc (2026), Tristan Harris concludes: "We need to find the path... The middle path... A narrow way... Between the promise... and the peril." I disagree. I think we should find the path to the promise.

The AI Doc (2026) did not make a clear argument, nor did it present the actual landscape of possibilities an opinions on the subject. It was sort of hallucinatory montage of talking heads doing their prepared soundbites. Maybe I'm not the target audience but it failed to impress

The LLM takeover has made everything in computing so loosey-goosey. "Maybe it will work. Empirically, there's a good probability...". This is not what interested me about computing. Of course, sometimes it does work, which is magic. I am just a curmudgeon who doesn't like magic.

Consider the romance of discovering what parts of your job can’t be done by the machine. There are nooks, crannies, that will be inaccessible. The nook shall inherit the earth, somewhat Too late to discover the world Too early to discover the stars Time to discover the remainder (again)

You might think the "agents" thing is just coming for software engineers. Yeah, agents write code, code and code sells a bunch of tokens, But most people's work isn't code, it's memos or decks or whatever. Why this is false:

Today I announce Cantrip: On summoning entities from language in circles. In this book I unify the paradigm behind base models, chatbots, coding agents, RLMs, and RL agents, through the metaphor of magic. Code is provided.

I wish someone would argue with the bad faith anti-AI people they way they do. Go to Emily Bender like "you're triggering me by using the hostile register of the tenured academic". Call Gebru a googler. Say Emil Torres is doing eugenics by not having kids. If we're all gonna be stupid anyway...
