Today’s workflow: performing a uronic acid assay to quantify #capsular polysaccharide production in our #AMR bacterial isolates. Comprehensive phenotypic characterization beyond resistance profiling remains essential to understand key #virulence determinants.

This week we held our final in-person advisory board meeting for the DISPATch_MRGN junior research group. We had a fantastic time reflecting on 5 years of accomplishments and fruitful discussions. With the Baltic Sea right on our doorstep, we are beginning to investigate Vibrio species, some of which can be relevant opportunistic pathogens. Hopefully, we will gain exciting insights. The first infection this season in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was reported yesterday. #AMR #OneHealth

Molecular biology methods are key to our daily wet lab work. They're essential for uncovering mechanisms behind antibiotic resistance, bacterial fitness, and virulence. Combining these insights lays groundwork for novel strategies to combat #AMR pathogens.

During our stay in Kenya, we had the privilege to work alongside our incredible partners in the heart of the Masai Mara. Surrounded by thousands of cattle, we collected samples to study antimicrobial resistance in this stunning One Health setting. #AMR #OneHealth #fieldwork

Earlier this week, the #WHO published an analysis of global antibiotics use based on 2022 data. Only one-third of CTAs meet the goal of 70% Access antibiotic use. Watch antibiotics remain overused, fueling #AMR, while Reserve antibiotics are underused in many LMIC, highlighting access and data gaps.

Week two of the sampling in our #citizenscience project is wrapping up, but the lab work is just getting started🥼🧪. From the first samples, we were already able to isolate a strain that might be an ESBL-producing 𝘌. 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘪🦠🔬. Curious to see what the upcoming samples will bring🤔. #OneHealth

Today we've created a short video on isolating bacteria from water samples for a citizen science project. It will be shown to school children learning about antimicrobial resistance, #zoonoses, and #onehealth 🌍💧🔬, demonstrating how human, animal, and environmental health are connected.

We focus on two additional research pillars: Functional Omics and Aalternative Strategies. Through projects like DISPATch_MRGN and MDR-DEKOL, we are deepening our understanding of resistance development, fitness and virulence factors in order to develop alternative therapies against #AMR bacteria.

The #AMR Surveillance is supported by an innovative diagnostic pipeline (developed within the InnoDia project) encompassing standardized processing of samples as well as storage, cultivation and cultivation-free (meta-)genomics analyses.
