THAT is the problem with "better than nothing". MTPE fan TL is worse than nothing. It's actively detrimental to the games supposedly being translated and the community at large. It makes players associate the game with slop. It forestalls good-faith translations. It wastes everyone's time.

I think the internet has pushed us as a whole to conflate spreading around horrible demoralizing stuff as necessary and important activism but it really does not help anyone besides maybe the people enacting the horrible shit

If you feel that use of AI art assets at any stage of the process is an automatic out, but ChatGPT translations are fine if they're "checked" by people, it might be worth asking yourself why that is. Because it sounds a whole lot like valuing the work of translators less than other creatives to me.

That doesn't mean don't take bold, creative leaps. But it means you have to be willing to stand by your work, your approach, and its individuality and be prepared to show receipts for it all. There's no truly neutral approach in creative translations and even so-called direct ones have consequences.

Last thread on the matter because it's been a long week, but if there's one piece of advice I can offer to fan translators who truly want to do a good job, it's this: be prepared to take ownership for your work. That's the number one thing I find lacking in many, man fan translations in general.

You are setting the tone for that work. You are giving it a voice. You are saying your words represent the content, its identity, and its creators' intent as best you could. With games especially, full retranslations are rare; your work is going to be treated as the canon portrayal, like it or not.

I say this as a professional who came up from fan translation and has friends at Sega who will likely never get to work on this officially: when you fan translate ANYTHING that was previously untranslated, you have a deep, heavy responsibility in setting people's first and typically only impression.
