I’ve been reading Sarah Kendzior for a long time so I am not surprised when she plainly lays out all the evidence for a terrible thing to come, and then the terrible thing happens and everyone goes on throwing up their hands about how no one saw the obvious, terrible thing, coming in the distance.

Man, nothing makes the state of politics more apparent than when a warmongering monster who actively made life worse for millions of people dies and the supposed resistance party stalwarts come out of the woodwork to talk about how they’re going to miss their friend they had so much fun with.

Unless you personally know and have fought alongside a politician or they have a long, long, loooooong track record, you can’t just embrace them and then deflect every attack or scandal. These people don’t deserve your trust, only your suspicion. This has to change and it has to change fast.

People have to move on from this idea that politicians only do bad things or betray the public or won’t fight the fascists because they’re being blackmailed. It mystifies the influence of wealth in our systems and obscures the very obvious solutions.

Mitt Romney and other respectable Republicans are different than the Trump kind sure. They still think the poor are subhuman and deserve to suffer to enrich them personally, but they think it's impolite for you to notice and mention that they think that.

Helps to realize the tension within the MAGA/Right Wing world is between a group that wants to steal as much as possible and doesn't worry about popularity and another that is focused on a long term, anti-democratic fascist project. Where they meet is a willingness for violence and ending elections

And, to add insult to injury, the post-MAGA / anti-MAGA fascist movement will be directed and controlled by the same people who created MAGA in the first place and then used it to further enrich and empower themselves, the same way MAGA was anti-Neoliberal in rhetoric but just furthered that project

It's likely, as economic conditions worsen, that the fascists will portray this as a "knife in the back" betrayal by Trump because of Jewish control, which is already taking form if you pay attention. It might seem strange, but MAGA will likely give birth to a post-MAGA / anti-MAGA fascist movement.

And, yes, the Iran failure (and I don't think that war is over ftr) is transparent, but that failure is only going to worsen conditions, which will increase radicalization unless we channel it toward class politics, while feeding a larger fascist movement that will seek to avenge Trump's "betrayal"

The people turning on MAGA aren't going to become Democratic voters. Some will gain class consciousness but many more are anxiously awaiting the fascist direction the oligarchs will provide them. You can't just celebrate Trump's falling polls without understanding where these people are going.

If this is TL:DR, then this: Trump was a useful weapon in seeding fascism while expediting public plundering and the destruction of the post-WWII order and setting antidemocratic oligarchs up perfectly for the next step in their consolidation of power. And they won’t stop unless stopped.

The post-Trump fascist movement will be built with those who felt betrayed by him, have a strong antisemitic energy, and will continue to shepherd the base toward more explicitly fascist politics while also probably welcoming some of the middle class that has been liquidated in this period.

The fascist project is uniquely vulnerable right now because of how transparently corrupt and incompetent Trump is and the growing sense of class consciousness. That's why we can't waste anymore time actually constructing a democratic movement that demands change and addressing material conditions.

Trump's flailings and failings won't just make the fascists admit defeat and moderate. Their only route is to mobilize young fascists who see Trump as a traitor to their cause and who are lusting after more explicit white supremacy and the eradication of democracy. Their incentives interlock.

And, again, focusing completely on Trump is like thinking Ronald McDonald actually runs McDonald's. The apparatus behind MAGA is funded and directed by the wealth and oligarchical classes and they are relentlessly not just stealing but positioning things for the world they want to run.

In other words, unless we actually unite in solidarity and demand necessary changes, we're going to look back on the Trump Years as a relatively moderate time in the face of what is brewing within the MAGA project. We still have time and I believe energy is shifting, but complacency isn't an option

We can't just "weather" Trumpism and expect things to return to normal. "Normal" laid the foundation for this moment. We can't return there and the people waiting in the wings for the post-Trump environment are very serious and very focused and far more ideology-driven than Trump and his sycophants.

Bleeding us. Bleeding. Us. And the fascist regime couldn’t give a shit less that the ramifications of all this will make Americans suffer for generations. I cannot believe how disastrous this regime is. I study and analyze this and yet every new development is so far beyond anything imaginable.

If the dominant machine in a party holds onto power for an extended period its base/donor relationship only strengthens as they engage in a long term project. The Obama Machine (and Pelosi/Schumer) is still tied to corporate partnerships as the corporations have grown increasingly antidemocratic.

In order for a party to change in this current alignment there has to be a takeover of the apparatus and machinery. The Clinton Machine was taken over by the Obama Machine and there was no Biden Machine, just an extension of the Obama one. It’s so entrenched its operations wont shift.

We saw a takeover attempt by Sanders in 16/20, but the Obama and adjacent partners undercut it, leaving a party that’s essentially helmed by part-time strategists who get their actual money from corporate partners they helped in power and now serve on their boards.

The present Democratic Party was born when the DLC and emerging Clinton Machine embraced neoliberalism and moved away from labor unions and marginalized communities in order to grow corporate and wealth bases, and as that took shape the party’s political goals and ideology changed.

People still think a party can just change based on a candidate here and there but that paradigm shift has to also involve a shift in donors and partners and the corporate space is almost completely dedicated to antidemocratic monopolization efforts. That’s where the problem lies.

And the Obama Machine, considering its length of power and outside projects, is sclerotic without being aged (not counting Schumer / Pelosi), meaning they’re all busy with corporate projects outside government until someone like a Sanders threatens the tenuous control over the party.

The Obama Machine seized power in 08 by partnering with emerging players like Google but lashed the Dems to corporations that would, as monopolization and hoarding of resources took off, turn more antidemocratic and more and more dedicated to corporate aims over public good.

The point is that just yelling at Dems to fight doesn’t do it. The Democratic Party is like a sports franchise owned by a billionaire with several other projects. Sometimes it languishes because ownership is still lucrative but it’s simply not the priority.

Rarely does a party change immediately. The financial incentives are too high for wealthy partners who effectively own a party in order to sway both legislation and also maintain a grip over what “resistance” to their own aims is defined as. You create tension and opportunities.

If you want a Democratic Party that addresses the crisis and fights, you can’t just shrug and accept what it gives you. You have to antagonize and use the power of the vote as well as donations to create tension so that a new machine with different partners and goals can emerge.

There was an op-ed in/from The Economist this week that made a vein stand out on my forehead, decrying the Me-First socialism of Gen-Z. I mean I get it from the source and all but fucking hell. “Spare a thought for the smol bean megacorps draining the water table.”
