I mean it's all after-the-fact arbitrary. You can't reason with it. I think if God made 450 out of 1,000 kids die in the 1800s and modern medicine reduced that to 6 out of 1,000 then science is more compassionate than God. So either science IS doing God's work. Or your God is a cruel monster.
