An excellent article on resisting AI in schools: “It took software developers in an METR study who used AI tools 19 percent more time to do their work. Nevertheless, because they expected to save time, they believed their work had been sped up by 20 percent.” (Via

Today we say goodbye to the very best of us, and we will all feel his loss for many years to come. Over the last 2 years especially, he had become one of my closest confidants and dearest friends, and I will greatly miss his wisdom and comfort. Mind how you go, mate. You'll always be fridge to me.

We saw Michael,

, June this year. It was a lovely visit. He talked about his writing and how much he enjoyed collaborating on his writing. That it took him into another world.

Devastated to have to share that
@wombat37.bsky.social
passed way last night with his beloved Mary by his side. I will miss him so very much, and know many of you will too. We must take care of each other and stay a community. I’m here for you all, and will do my best to keep in touch.

Takanori Takebe’s strange investigation into whether humans can use the gut for breathing has surprisingly sentimental origins: helping his dad.

Well, that was a pain. But given that the solar power company wanted $5k to remove the old solar power installation, it was worth it.

I'm practicing my Spanish by reading the Spanish version of Hombre Perro. (
@hugeshark.bsky.social
very kindly got me a set of ten for my last birthday.) I'm just musing on the joke on this page. The dog she wants to buy is 100 pesos plus tax. She pays 100 pesos plus tacks. It only works in English.

I just searched on Costco for some men's bikini brief underwear. One of the items returned was "Suncast Smart Tube Hose Hideaway with Brass Connections" I'd love to know how the near-match search algorithm works.

Exciting news! We’re thrilled to announce that tapir Yuna gave birth to a rare and endangered Malayan tapir calf Sunday night. The newborn, covered in distinctive white spots and stripes resembling a fuzzy walking watermelon, is only the second tapir born in our 120-year history.

They’re saying Elon’s not smart enough to build a submarine capable of visiting the wreckage site of the Titanic. They’re saying he doesn’t have enough money or gumption to do it. They’re saying he’s too much of a loser that he couldn’t even find four to five friends to bring along with him.

I just sent some money to a friend. The banking app required me to say what the money was for. I wrote "Hookers and blow." It kept saying "Remove inappropriate language" and wouldn't let me send it. I had to settle for the more boring "Living expenses." What if it really was for hookers and blow?

I was on a flight across the country a few days ago and was curious whether my smart watch could pick up enough GPS satellites to establish location. I put the watch on "bike" mode and held it to the plane window. I now have a new cycling record of 525 MPH and 6,160 ft of ascent.

On my canyon hike yesterday I saw my first bobcat in the wild. At first I thought I'd only got it's tail in, which is to the right and bottom of the pic. Then a friend said "Wait! Is that an eye?" It's to the left of the shot. Once you see it, the rest of the details of the bobcat slowly fill in.
