Normally when presidents embark on a regime-change strategy, they give a major policy address and seek support from both Congress and the UN. Trump hasn’t done any of that — he’s simply entangling the U.S. with Venezuela for reasons that he won’t fully explain.

More legally defensible than blowing up boats, but that doesn’t make it a good idea or policy.

The release will only happen when Russia 1) ceases its aggression, including hybrid attacks against EU countries, and 2) pays for war reparations. It's a high bar that Moscow will most likely never meet. So the assets will be locked in for good.

US Initial Jobless Claims: Don’t be fooled by seasonal head fakes. It’s more noise than signal. The time of year one gets big seasonal swings in both directions. Especially large moves in California & Texas over the past two reporting periods.

The latest read on the labor market comes in the unemployment insurance claims data released this morning. Toplines: - regular UI claims rose, but appear to be typical for this time of year - claims for federal workers declined as paychecks resumed after the shutdown furloughs
