The other thing I wish I could tell everyone is that the machine learning is more specifically a parallel Bayesian inversion via MCMC (Metropolis modified with a form of "parallel tempering"), but that's trickier to explain so I'm worried folks are assuming we're using neural nets or something silly

Yeah, we're effectively blind to an impact winter (as are most proxies) -- but importantly not to the CO2 or SO2 that would have been emitted by the impact (CO2 sticking around for many time bins and SO2 falling out of atmosphere but going on to influence ocean alkalinity which is included in model)
