I think roguelikes are at their best when using randomness to facilitate unique interactions with interesting systems, and a lot of post-balatro games seem to forego any systems beyond engaging with the randomness itself, which feels kinda gross to me a lot of the time

This stuff has been on my mind a lot in the last year. I'd say that the issue goes well past casino-themed roguelikes. These kinds of patterns are so well established that they no longer register, and games that find success are often full of them. Casino theme only makes them a lot more obvious.

Finally working on something for #CorgiJam. Always wanted to make a small game in #pico8 and this seemed like a great opportunity. Hopefully I get to add a bunch of fun levels and polish it a little in the remaining two days.

I started listening to a bunch of GOTY podcast episodes and it made me realize that I should just listen to music instead.

Any recommendations for roguelikes/run-based games from 2025? My faves so far are Sol Cesto and Gnomes. Starvaders is also good, but didn't grab me as much as those two. Also played more chaotic ones like Ball x Pit, Nubby, Dogpile and Merge Maestro, none of which I really liked.

So, “Order of the Sinking Star” by Thekla was just announced, which takes several small free games (two of which are mine) and gives them a major graphical upgrade and mashes up their rulesets. I haven’t been very involved but it’s a great concept and looks cool.
