It's fitting that "kitchen table issues" is a reference to sitting down at your kitchen table to pay your snail-mail bills and balance your checkbook on physical paper, something which has been obsolete for decades.

I have grown increasingly more sympathetic to Lincolnâs argument that the slave power was preparing the way for another Dred Scott decision that would prohibit states from banning slavery. When I first read it in grad school, I thought he was being paranoid. No more.

Just to be clear, Governor Newsom hasn't broken any laws. If this line is crossed, and the President has a sitting governor arrested, then the choice for Democratic leaders, senior military officers and federal employees becomes one of accepting dictatorship or taking drastic action.

You can see America as a nation built on a monstrous agenda of genocide, enslavement, apartheid. Or you can see America as a nation of people who - massacred, enslaved, disenfranchised - absolutely refused again and again to accept that agenda. I am so proud of that second nation.

The consequences that befall Musk now that he's attacked Trump publicly will be a measure of how well the US fits the competitive authoritarian model. The more severe, the better the fit. I despise Musk, but for the sake of US democracy, I hope his punishment doesn't violate the rule of law.

New piece: Most Trump voters did not "vote to deport moms." They voted bc inflation was high under Biden, to deport criminals, or something else. Many do not support Trump's policies. Welcoming those voters back into the tent is key to future Dem victory.

Trumpâs policy agenda is very unpopular, including with many of his supporters. To win the next election, Democrats need to welcome regretful Trump voters back under the tent

My granddaddy hated pessimistic outlooks. He had survived too damn much to ever think there was no hope. When I got to that point he'd either say "Can't never did do nothing" or if he was REALLY pissed "Find the steel in your spine and then use it like a fucking sword against those stopping you."
