I have spent the past several months studying the cutting-edge research on modern democracies that have defeated authoritarian leaders. I've learned that the conventional wisdom on the topic is wrong — in ways that have clear implications for the US going forward THREAD

How to stop a dictator
I spent months studying how authoritarians like Trump lose. The answer is shockingly simple.

This reminds me of my favorite fact about Sherman: marching bands were determined to relentlessly troll him by playing “Marching Through Georgia” whenever he was present.

The background to Jeb Bush’s “please clap” comment in 2016 was actually way more depressing in retrospect — he was saying he wasn’t going to be a divisive jerk and his audience of Republican voters just sat there stone-faced.

I'm glad to see you finally acknowledging it, but I'm surprised that you're not really grappling with why you were personally so late to recognizing it or dismissive of people who got there earlier. Seems like an opportunity for reflection or like some mea culpas might be due.

I do think there is something like The Blob and I also think it cannot be blamed for Trump’s foreign policy decisions. Both are bad, albeit in distinct ways.

There is a reason that consolidating control over the media system is one of the very first things that authoritarians do, every single time. And Trump has sought to do exactly that. We need to build and maintain a strong opposition press with a big reach:

I have grown increasingly more sympathetic to Lincoln’s argument that the slave power was preparing the way for another Dred Scott decision that would prohibit states from banning slavery. When I first read it in grad school, I thought he was being paranoid. No more.
