Adventures in terrain generation from a heightmap using #godot. The two big issues I'm having are: - Stitching chunk geometry to neighbors; need to work out some way to generate a border based on the LOD of the neighboring chunk. - Averaging the normals so it stops looking like an evil quilt.

Finding my own brain very frustrating. Randomly in the middle of the month, after 6-7 weeks of being totally creatively dead, my dopamine switch is back in the right spot and I'm feeling motivated to work on a project. Just... none of the existing outstanding projects, a brand new one. Augh.

Not a great month for working on projects. Got a little bit done on the current Vangers-esque project but fell down a rabbit hole trying to generate geometry instead of just drawing tiles. Travelling for two weeks as of Monday, so will see if I get time for project stuff before EOM.

I spent 45 minutes with silksong and these are my first impressions: is this real? Events appear to transpire beyond some sort of barrier or screen I cannot influence aside from pressing buttons on my "side" of the dividing medium, but if these bugs are really doing all that it should be on the news

Jesus Christ the vocal delivery in I Am Your Beast is something else. The music is like being punched in the head (positive) and the gameplay is like punching other people in the head. Very very glad I picked it up.

The problem with getting things to the point of being playable is that I keep going to test something and then spend 20 minutes playing it instead. Lots of backend work done today to support things like menus, game modes, etc. Pleased with how it's coming together. #gamedev #indiedev #monogame

Took the day off sick and spent all of it tinkering with mechanics for my August project. On the positive side it looks and feels a lot more like an actual playable game now, but on the negative side I didn't actually chill out at all and I'm back at work tomorrow. Choices have been made.

My love for godot has reached a level where I feel comfortable yelling at it. This is an important stage in any relationship to a piece of software, and absolutely healthy / not indicative of anything bad in my character.

Watching itch.io implode over the last week made me remember when indie games were .exe files made by a stranger that you downloaded from a self-hosted website that still used <marquee>. If handling money wasn't such a nightmare it wouldn't be so bad to go back to that. Platforms delenda est, etc.

idk I think any broad prescriptive statement about game design, or even questions phrased along the lines of "should game design be x? or should it be y?" is very easily to dismiss because game design is a practice, a set of tools, a tradition, and an artform; it's not a set of rules

Coloured light blending is working! Next is wall masking so it looks less bizarre in areas with dense tiles. Also, Debug Drake says gay rights. #gamedev #monogame

More work on lighting... using dithering for the falloff gives a really fun textured vibe I think. Still need to sort out coloured lighting that blends along the edges, and work out why moving a light stops every other light from displaying. Progress... #gamedev #monogame

Tile lighting working at a basic level! Had issues with bake-in initially, but it's doing more or less what I want it to now. Next step is adding the dithered effect to the edges, and maybe animating the alpha to make it look smoother when moving. A shadow shader could be good... #gamedev #monogame
