Mahmoud Khalil’s freedom makes all of us a little more free. Whatever opinions you may hold about the issues on which Khalil speaks out, if they can detain him for his views, they can detain you for yours. Doubt that they will at your peril. Celebrate his release as a win for freedom itself.

Trump and his administration have made it abundantly clear that they are intent on silencing everybody who disagrees with them. But we will not be silenced. We must always speak out to defend immigrants, democracy, and justice. No public official should be arrested for asking questions of ICE.

Arresting a public official for asking questions is dangerous intimidation and sends an unmistakably authoritarian message – that ICE doesn’t care about the rule of law, and that anyone exercising their right to challenge ICE and speak up for immigrants will be punished.

WIN: A federal court found that there is no legitimate basis for Mahmoud Khalil’s continued detention and he must finally be released to his wife and newborn child. This is a clear rejection of the Trump administration’s ploy to detain and deport Mahmoud solely for his political beliefs.

To pass a free and democratic world on to our children, we’re just being asked to take principled public stands, refuse to capitulate to corruption, and take collective action including with those with whom we disagree. We owe at least that much to those who 81 years ago were asked to do far more.

I was born in the McCarthy era, but this is McCarthyism on steroids. Our democracy is under dire threat. But we have a government of laws, not men. And NO ONE is above the law.

The New York for All Act would keep our state out of the cruelty that Trump is inflicting. The legislation explicitly prevents local law enforcement and state agencies from colluding with ICE. It would specifically ban state and local law enforcement from entering or continuing 287(g) agreements.

BREAKING: A federal judge just ruled for our clients and blocked the Trump administration from enforcing a directive prohibiting schools from teaching or operating any programs related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We'll keep fighting until this directive is stopped for good.
