I can't get over this number: in 2007, there were 360,000 newspaper jobs. Now, there are 80,000. "My local paper sucked!" Sure. What sucks even more? The void. "I get all my news from the Guardian!" No, the Guardian doesn't report on your town council, your school board, local cops.

Since we won our union election in May, Hearst has refused to bargain with us, while repeatedly violating labor law. Last week, we filed four Unfair Labor Practice charges against the company 🧵

Happy birthday to the Connecticut News Guild! One year ago today, Hearst CT journalists announced we were forming a union. Since then, we have withstood the company’s union-busting, won an election with 80% of the vote and become official NewsGuild of NY members.

“Our goal is simple: to agree to fair contracts so we can continue working hard to inform the communities we cover.”

Minutes ago, more than 290(!) Hearst journalists from across the country sent this letter to our bosses, demanding they treat us with the respect and dignity we deserve. In CT that means dropping spurious appeals and respecting our rights as unionized employees.

We recently held a union election at Hearst Connecticut Media, and we learned minutes ago that… WE WON!!! By an overwhelming vote of 68-17, our members voted to unionize as part of @newsguild.org. It’s a great day for journalism in CT! 🐳🐳🐳
