Also, the benefit a reader gets from a book is not exhausted at the last page. Given the choice between writing 200 books, each of which the reader will never think of again, or 1 book that will stay in the reader's brain all their life, the choice is obvious.

THE END. 101,000 words on my (checks notes) 17th novel. It's rough as guts. Characters are inconsistent. Plot points vanish into the ether. The protag has five different competing motivations. It's a pile of mud. But it's good mud and I'm gonna shape it into something real pretty.
