I'm weirdly nervous about my two favorite cultures: Boston/New England and Scotland coming together over the next few weeks. It's like fixing up your friends on a blind date? Will they get along? Will they behave? What if they embarrass themselves (and me!)?

Son's got his face paint, a new saltire, and a travel kilt (he doesn't want to endanger his good kilt) for his trip to the #WorldCup. I think his immigrant forebears packed a bit differently when they went to Boston in 1906.

Deeply saddened to learn of Gordon Wood's passing. Few have had an equal impact on the study of the American Founding, or on my own intellectual development. No book is more responsible for making me a historian of early constitutional history than Wood's *The Creation of the American Republic*.

Terrible news.

Look at what I discovered in one of my books today! Scots are going to be paying a wee bit more than $25 to watch football in Foxborough in the next few weeks! I miss ticket stubs, e-tickets don't evoke the same memories (and you can't use them as bookmarks!).

Most mornings our son drops by for coffee on his way to work. If the Red Sox have lost the night before he'll ask me, "How did the Red Sox do last night?" When you emigrate the next generation assimilates, so I guess it's my fault he's a smart-arsed Scot. His sister will inherit everything.

It must be emphasized that we need powerful, robust ACADEMIC history IN universities to sustain history OUTSIDE universities. If we can’t employ people in higher ed to train future generations of public historians, we will not have future generations of public historians. 🗃️

Ran into the old boy from the ground floor in our block who's a huge Hearts fan. He's Edinburgh to his core. He said he remembers the near-misses in 1965 and 1986 but this was the worst. "I probably won't see another one. Never mind. This was the best season I can remember."

Attended a University-wide awards ceremony tonight. Truly awe-inspiring. You forget you’re surrounded by people devoted to questions like “how do wind turbines behave in snow?” and “what’s the best way to treat outpatient COVID?” Academics' hyper-specific obsessions are keeping civilization running.

The British state has no idea what to do with the "Jr" after my name. USians: if you think your kids might want to live abroad, spare them a lifetime of confusion and refrain from giving them name suffixes! (It does mean my nieces and nephews can call me "Uncle Junior."
