I've started using reference more heavily when modeling and now I feel silly I didn't start sooner, there are no resources online that can teach game topology as good as actual production models.

Form design for creatures is a balance of anatomy that grounds it into reality looks "movie concept art"-y and more out there elements that risk having it look cartoony. Tentacle arms are cool but a punch doesn't hit as hard without the sharp bend of an elbow... Also rigging non-human stuff lol

Need to remind myself Team Ninja didn't even bother getting a story down before designing enemies in 2. I love the part about team members vouching for the enemies they worked on.

A lot of articles were warning about a world where we might celebrate games who use AI without our knowledge but looking at Castle Crashers DLC, Dawn of War Remastered and Clair Obscur even when we do know people do not seem to care. Quite depressing.

It was. Basically my engine has always been designed to be forward compatible - all moveset files from the first alpha are still parsed by the current version of the engine. There's a horrible series of if/else that check the version number and restore old behavior (such as IPS systems and such)

Ever since Sigma 2, 3D Ninja Gaiden games have found new and innovative ways to get everything about the series wrong. Ignoring the bigger stuff like parries, rail sections and yellow (not BLUE???) paint, NG4 messing up the feel of wall jumps and OTs is almost inspiring.

after playing more and more beat-em-ups (old, new, 2D, 3D, arcade, console, """""character action""""", whatever), I think I'm coming to realize what a lot of modern 3D beat-em-ups and action RPGs (and even modern 2D ones as well) which is "enemies that actively try to not get hit by your attacks"

I'm confident in my decision making in regards to game design but I've been unable to progress when it comes to character and weapon design. There's too many different contexts slamming together and I don't know which ones to prioritize. Do I design for the story? Gameplay? Genre expecations?

i feel like a) indie games have occupied a similar position for a lot of players from the beginning & b) so much of the default experience of using software and the internet has moved in this direction so it's unfortunately not very surprising to me

It's interesting to see how the PC/social-media context of being a modern indie dev affects the design more than the inspiration sometimes. I'll see games mention being inspired by console games yet the showcase shows mouse aiming to be an essential aspect of the combat/movement etc

Wish my development speed could keep up with the rate I add cool shit to my design doc. Newly implemented features this week so far are behavior trees for enemies through a cool Godot extension with a now unfortunate name and an attack ticket system.

Milestone 001: Input buffer is done, becoming the sloppiest code in my game yet. Thankfully it should handle anything I throw at it so not a big issue. Next: Actually finish the main character's model!

Doing some research into how other action games handle input buffering and Ninja Gaiden 2 is weird. The buffering for button presses is huge but at the same time joystick directions are handled separately. Motions like forward or 360 are only checked when the attack triggers.
