Nothing to make me feel older than realizing when I started writing about a certain set of prints they were "nearly 500 years old" and now they are "over 500 years old"...

This Passover I’m thinking hard about the holiday’s history of resistance to tyrannical leaders, and the imperative for Jewish people to stand with all oppressed peoples of the world.

One of my favourite courses I ever took in undergrad was a history of architecture course for which we had to sketch to a theme each week. It is such an amazing way to see things in a new light, so I can only imagine how enriching this course would be.

A friendly PSA for my fellow Canadians: the Americano as the name for the coffee drink is already a knock against Americans who were scoffed at by Italians for drinking watered down coffee, so please, I beg of you, don’t rename it the Canadiano. It’s not the clever move you think it is.

So this is really cool: a stamp impression from the library of the Ilkhanid vizier Rashid al-Din (d. 1318). It reads “pious endowment [waqf] of the Rashidiyya library,” & it may have been inspired by Chinese prints/stamps. Stamped waqf notices are totally unheard of for this time!

Just to say that if this is the link is censored for you, I can confirm it IS adult content in that there won't be many children with doctorates in early modern economic history, but the image is definitely safe for work.

I am continually fascinated by Fludd’s back square, both conceptually and materially. To depict this void required a substance: black printing ink. Which is composed of carbon: so the void or absence ends up depicted by the presence of burnt, earthly matter.

Obsessed with this totally strange doubling that takes place in the corner of the arcade of the courtyard of Palazzo Venezia ca. 1460. You really get a sense of how the architect and sculptor were one in the same.
